Concept Design for a Nuclear Weapons Memorial

The Heart of the Mountain memorial in Chaghi, Pakistan, stands as a poignant testament to the devastating consequences of nuclear warfare. Nestled within the hollow created by the last nuclear test conducted in the region, this project seeks to transform a symbol of destruction into a space of reflection, remembrance, and hope.

The architectural concept behind Heart of the Mountain centers on a subtle intervention that respects the existing geological formation. Rather than imposing a new structure, the design focuses on enhancing the natural void left by the explosion. The hollow has been refined into a large, cubical space, creating a sense of enclosure within the vastness of the mountain.

A significant element of the memorial is the light well, a vertical shaft that introduces natural light into the concealed chamber. This light well serves as a metaphor for hope and renewal, contrasting with the darkness and destruction associated with the nuclear test.
